Since I was a child, my father has always cultivated this environment where by everybody will have to come home on time, and we would spend about an hour to two hours, sitting by the dining table, talking about our day while having our family dinner.
To him, this was an extremely vital part of building a positive family relationship.
He believes that communication is the key to building and maintaining a good relationship.
Just like any other, children were most unhappy when their fathers scold them. Given a father who spends a lot of time with his children, if he were to reprimand them for a mistake they have done, the children are more likely to listen and behave more appropriately in the future.
As compared to a father who is absent most of the time. When he scolds his children, they are more likely to feel angry towards him.
If I were the child, I would have a tiny voice in my head screaming out "Who does this man think he is? He is invisible in my life. The only time he talks to me is when he scolds me! *And insert more angry words*"
I strongly believe communication is two-way. It would always take two hands to clap. :-)
